Goodbye Social Media

Since I upgraded my phone 2 months ago, I never gained the motivation to log in to Facebook or Instagram (I don’t use Twitter). Actually, prior to that, my social network usage has already died down… I didn’t post anything about my recent 2 trips at all, just can’t find the motivation.

For Facebook, I found it most difficult to make the decision to post the content even though I want my family and friends to see those, because I know there are more than just families and friends are going to see those. My “Facebook friends” could be anybody from my middle school acquaintance to my husband. I know, I know I can set up groups, but man that’s just too much work.

For Instagram, we all know it’s a game of look… When the food is served, you first spend 5 minutes to find the best angle, best lighting, maybe also lift up the noodles with chopsticks as well, to take the best shot. Then, you spend the next 5 minutes find the best filter, adjust the lighting and contrast, find some trendy emojis and hashtags. When you are finally ready to eat, your food is cold, so is your meal mate’s heart. That makes me sad.

The trouble goes on. Maybe this is more of my personal trouble — after posting, I can’t stop being curious about what others think about my posts. Who liked it? What did people comment? Oh, I need to respond to the comment otherwise it’s rude. It goes on and on and on, just like an infinity pool described in Jake Knapp’s new book <Make Time>.

I also looked at Twitter, ouch it’s like a battle field filled with opinions, strong opinions! I think it will just get me more irritated.

After all those analysis, I asked myself seriously — what should I do with my online social life? I do want our Michigan grandparents to know what’s going on with our California life, I do want to share cute corgi pictures to add more smiles in people’s lives, I also want to document precious moments in our life because we only live once. But I don’t want the sharing becomes my mental burden, or a significant distraction from my life priorities, neither do I want to interfere other people’s feed with things they don’t really care.

So what’s the conclusion?

Well, you are seeing it right now! A personal blog to tell and share.

If people are really interested in my life and thoughts, I believe, they will find their way here.
